Borussia Dortmund v PSG preview
PSG head into the opening leg of their Champions League semi final tie having just been crowned champions of France for the third season in a row, and the 10th in time in the last 12 years.
Luis Enrique’s side have an unassailable 12 point at the top of Ligue 1 with just three matches remaining following the weekend’s results despite only managing a 3-3 draw with Le Havre, with half an eye focused on tonight’s Champions League game.
The Parisians’ early securing of the league title means than full focus can now go towards the French side looking to be crowned champions of Europe for the first time in the club’s history, also becoming the first French European champions in 31 years.
PSG have lost just once in all competitions since a 2-1 defeat by AC Milan in matchday four of the Champions League group stage back in November, with that sole defeat coming in the first leg of their quarter-final tie with Barcelona, which they ended up winning 6-4 on aggregate.
The French side have reached the last four despite only finished second in their group, behind Borussia Dortmund of all teams, prior to knocking out the Spanish duo of Real Sociedad and Barcelona ahead of tonight’s fixture.
Borussia Dortmund, in contrast, have struggled domestically with results this season, so much so that winning the Champions League this season might be their best shot at qualifying for the competition next season.
Edin Terzic’s side currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga table, five points behind Leipzig who occupy what is currently the fourth and final Champions League qualifying spot
However, UEFA’s coefficient rankings mean Germany will, as things stand and depending on how other German clubs fare in Europe this season, have a fifth team in the Champions League this season, which would be Dortmund, who are guaranteed a top five finish.
The German side head into tonight’s home leg winless in their two matches since their 4-2 win over Atletico Madrid to book their quarter final spot, which includes a 4-1 defeat to Leipzig on Saturday afternoon.
Dortmund are unbeaten at home in the Champions League this season, which will be a cause for optimism for the underdogs, having finished top of Group G and beaten PSV in the second round prior to their quarter final victory over Atletico.
As mentioned previously, the two sets have already met in this competition this season, with PSG winning 2-0 in Paris before a 1-1 draw in Dortmund, leaving the German side with only one win six matches against the Parisians, who, however, have never won at Signal Iduna Park in their three visits.
